The Northwest Kansas Technical College Crime Scene Investigation program and the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office announced a partnership to bring technology to the classroom in Goodland, Kansas. The Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office, with money seized from drug enforcement, has purchased and donated a DJI Inspire 2 Drone for the Crime Scene Investigation program. The drone will be utilized on mock crime scenes and allow CSI program students to train on the incorporation of technology out in the field.
“We will use the drone right now for high definition overhead photography of scenes,” commented CSI Instructor, Jason Showalter. “We plan to purchase software to create diagrams of scenes as well as FLIR camera technology to use in night time search and rescue operations”. The partnership not only brings technology to the classroom but to all of Western Kansas and Eastern Colorado law enforcement.
The drone will be housed on the Northwest Tech Mobile Crime Scene Response Unit, which is currently partnered with the Goodland Police Department, Burlington Colorado Police Department and the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office. Finding its place on the CSRV will allow it to be deployed to local agencies more quickly.
“We are happy to be able to bring this cutting edge technology to the CSI students through use of seizure funds. An MOU agreement with the college brings this technology to our department so it will benefit the citizens of Saint Francis and Cheyenne County,” stated Sheriff Cody Beeson.
The college is excited about adding another solid partnership with a regional law enforcement agency. “This partnership will allow us to assist law enforcement agencies around the area who need this type of technology for search and rescue and crime scene documentation,” said Northwest Tech President Ben Schears. “Partnerships with local agencies benefit our communities as well as provide hands-on training for our students”.
Northwest Tech’s CSI program is in its fourth year of existence and continues to be one of the fastest growing programs on Northwest Tech’s campus. The program combines classroom theory with hands on training that makes students career and real world ready.
